COLOR!!

 8th graders are working on learning each of the elements of art! We are working on COLOR!!! First we drew a color wheel and discussed different color families.  After I was confident that the students were familiar with the basic color families we were ready to move on to the next color assignment and we were HUNGRY!!! We used vanilla icing, vanilla wafers and food coloring to make an edible color wheel!! Student were asked to mix all the colors for the primary and secondary colors.   They also had to complete the color wheel and get it approved by me before they could eat.  Next, we started our symmetrical color design project.  We learned 8 different color families/schemes... primary, secondary, intermediate, tints, shades, neutrals, warm and cool!!! After designing our pattern we used tempera paint.  Lastly, we used sharpie markers to clean up our lines. Great Job!!

Pirates ARRRRT CLUB

SMS ARRRRT (said like a pirate) CLUB!!! This year we will be providing art club for all grades (6, 7, and 8)! Art club will take place every other Tuesday (which Tuesday depends on students grade).  It will begin after school at 2:30 and the bus will come between 3:10 and 3:15.  The first meeting will be after school on Tuesday Oct. 16th.  We will discuss what we will do in art club, our mission, and possible projects and fund raisers.  The fee is $3.00 to join which will buy students art supplies and materials and include the cost for the art museum field trip at the end of the year.  Students can sign up on the door of the art room till the end of this week!

Mona Lisa Parodies!!

6th graders learned about the most famous painting in the world last week.  THE MONA LISA!!! We discussed how almost 6 million people visit it each year and where they had seen the painting before.  Students called out that they had seen it in movies, T.V. shows (like Wizards of Waverly Place)  and many many more places. Many people make parodies of this painting because of its fame.  So... that is what we did!! I printed out a copy of the Mona Lisa and students cut her away form the background.  Next, they decided which setting they wanted to put her in.  I love how each idea was different and unique!!We had gazelle Lisa, tissue Lisa and even Mona Gump!! Next, we outlined our design in black marker and colored them in with colored pencil.  Great Job!!

Space in Perspective

8th graders at SMS are learning the elements of art!! We began this year learning about SPACE (I know what you're thinking...not aliens and planets). First we watched a presentation about space, which you can see at http://prezi.com/jz40tuidn9m-/space-1-point-perspective/ 

Next, we practiced vanishing point and horizon line by drawing boxes in perspective.  Once we completed this, we were ready to start drawing the hallway!! We spent two days in the hallway planning and sketching our picture. The next day, we stayed in the classroom so we could add our own colors and ideas. 

Illuminated Letters

 

Sixth Graders are moving quickly through our art history timeline and have created Illuminated letters.  Illuminated letters were from important manuscripts a long time ago.  These manuscripts included an illuminated first letter on the page.  These were expensive manuscripts because each was hand made and they are "illuminated" because the letter was often adorned with gold leaf.  Students began by learning about illuminated letters and looking at many examples (like from the beginning of the movie Shrek) and they chose a letter that had meaning to them.  Most students picked the first letter of their first or last name but some chose letters for other reasons.  We decorated them with intricate patterns and traced with black sharpie markers.  Lastly, we used metallic paint (to mimic the gold leaf) and painted our letters.  These look great in these pictures but really shine in person!! Great Job!!
